Special Edition E-News: Continuing to build on crisis mental health reforms

Press Release

Date: March 17, 2017

Dear Friend,

When I first arrived in Congress, I didn't foresee how my efforts to reform our nation's broken mental health care system would take center stage in Washington. But here we are. And as the only practicing psychologist in elected federal government, I will continue to fight for families in mental health and addiction crisis to bring meaningful reforms to our nation's health care system.

As Congress delivers on the promise of delivering relief from the collapsing Affordable Care Act (ACA), we will be forward thinking and not re-purpose yesterday's failed policies to solve today's problems. That includes better strategies to advance mental health and addiction treatment.

This week, I focused my efforts on getting the facts about mental health and substance abuse coverage under the American Health Care Act. With skyrocketing rates of suicide and an opioid epidemic that has taken our nation by storm, we have so much more work to do. Congress made significant strides last year when the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act was signed into law. I am proud to say we are furthering those goals under the American Health Care Act. I made a promise to never stop fighting for the families in mental health crisis, and it's one that I intend to keep.

This is not a partisan battle. This is not about politics. This is about delivering treatment before tragedy, a goal that every American can aspire to; I hope you will join me in this effort.
